I dumped my grocery bags in the car and headed straight to Palmetto Inn. I only promised I wouldn’t tell Sheridan or the producer. I didn’t say anything about Linnea or the sheriff. Although I was almost one hundred percent certain Leesa was truthful about her alibi, it would be easy enough to confirm her story before sharing the information with law enforcement.

I found Linnea alone in the kitchen. There seemed to be pots and pans on every square inch of counter space. Linnea’s white-blond hair was fashioned in a messy bun and her ‘Kitchen Witch’ apron was dusted with flour and sugar.

“What’s going on back here?” I asked.

She didn’t smile. “A culinary disaster. I should have known better than to try this recipe without magic.”

I approached the counter with caution. There was nowhere to touch that wouldn’t involve leaving with traces of food on my black clothes.

“Why are you cooking without magic?”

“Because Rick suggested I’m not capable of it.”

Frederick ‘Rick’ Simms was Linnea’s minotaur boyfriend. “Why does he care whether or not you use magic in the kitchen?”

She tilted her head and sighed. “You know how non-magic users can be. They think we’re overly reliant on our powers to accomplish basic tasks.”

“But if you know that’s not true, then why feel the need to prove it to him?”

She untied her apron and tossed it on the counter. “That’s a good question and one I should probably explore with a therapist.”

I pressed my lips together. “Linnea, is everything okay between you and Rick?”

“Yes, it’s only a bump in the road. Nothing serious.” She opened the refrigerator and pulled out a jug of iced tea. “How about a drink?”

“Sure.”

She poured two tall glasses of iced tea and passed one to me. “How’s Natural Selection?”

“Strange.”

“Any leads on the murderer?”

“Granger and his team are working on it.”

Linnea fixed me with a curious expression. “What do you think of the new member of his team?”

“Deputy Pitt? She’s nice.”

“And very pretty. I can see men committing crimes just to be arrested by her.”

“That’s one way to meet your future wife.”

“No stranger than a television show.” She sipped her iced tea. “What are the other women like? Are the claws out?”

“Oh, definitely. These women are committed.” And some of them needed to be committed.

“Wyatt should be the prospective mate on a show like that. He’d be in his natural element.”

“Except the point is to marry one of them. I don’t think he’d be thrilled with that part.”

“Yeah, I think once was enough for him. What do you think of the guy? What’s his name again?”

“Sheridan Sinclair. He’s…what you would expect.”

She laughed. “Such effusive praise. I can practically hear the wedding bells.”

“I don’t know how anybody can truly get to know him. When his tongue will have been down five throats and his hand on three breasts in the course of a single day, how can he be expected to tell the women apart? Don’t all those body parts start to seem the same?”

Linnea cocked her head. “Five tongues but only three breasts?”

“Some women want to take it slower.
